Statement from Deirdre Lawrence Kittner, PhD, MPH, Director, CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health, on the passing of Becky Herner, Tips From Former Smokers® participant
It is with deep sadness that we share the loss of Becky Herner, a participant in CDC’s Tips From Former Smokers® (Tips®) campaign. Becky, a devoted mother, friend, and champion of anti-tobacco efforts, encouraged people who smoke to quit and others never to start. She was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and shared her story to help other people quit smoking.
Becky was dedicated to improving the lives of others, whether it was through her job as a public defender or through her story as part of the Tips campaign. Through Tips, she highlighted her experiences living with COPD and how her diagnosis impacted her family. Becky was dedicated to educating others about the importance of seeing a doctor if you have any symptoms of COPD.
Becky’s story saved lives. CDC will always remember Becky for her passion and dedication to sharing her story and warning others of the health risks associated with smoking cigarettes. We extend our sincere condolences to Becky’s family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.
